A Cold Winter

A frozen pond on our ranch

It’s been an unusually cold winter here – the coldest in 15 years. And we’ve learned a lot.

We’ve discovered that adobe floors stay pretty cold regardless of how much solar gain you get during the day. We’re modifying our plans to elevate the adobe floors over some wood and some insulation to assure better heat capture and overall warmer floors.

We’ve also learned that you can never have enough insulation!

We heat with “dead and down” trees from our ranch. We never cut live trees. All of the trees we use either died of natural causes or fell victim to lightning strikes. We’ve leaned that it’s all to easy to fall behind on wood cutting!
