It’s winter, but we’re already thinking about next year’s garden. Last year we tried a straw bale garden, but without much luck. The whiskey barrel containers we have did much better. So this next year we’re looking for raised beds.
One idea I love is a raised bed made of recycled wine bottles – http://gardenfowl.com/gardening/how-to-build-a-hot-bed-out-of-recycled-glass-bottles/
Not only is this a brilliant idea, it’s beautiful.
Another idea we want to try is to move the compost into rows and plant between them–this will be particularly nice to have with chickens around (and, yes, the chicken house is next spring’s big project).
All of this goes along with recent studies showing that small scale organic farming is the future of farming – http://www.takepart.com/article/2013/11/20/move-over-big-ag?cmpid=foodinc-fb
But for now it’s back to plastering the interior of the lodge, getting the ceilings finished, and a nice warm fire.
